ALCOSAN COMMUNITIES

Like many older regions of the country, particularly in the northeastern United States, Allegheny County relies on an aging and deteriorated sewer system, portions of which are more than a century old.

For decades, municipalities have grappled with the most effective way to manage the sewage overflows that occur during wet weather, primarily due to excess stormwater getting into their deteriorated municipal collection systems.

3 Rivers Wet Weather was created specifically to help 83 Allegheny County municipalities, including the City of Pittsburgh, develop a long-term, regional solution to the wet weather problem. The sewage collection systems, consisting of nearly 4,000 miles of pipes, in these communities flow into one wastewater treatment plant—the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority (ALCOSAN).
