Project Goal: To establish a mechanism for observing flow and condition of private house laterals to allow evaluation of their contribution to wet and dry weather flows in the sanitary sewer system.

Project Summary: The inflow/infiltration (I/I) abatement program initiated by MTSA included the complete rehabilitation of a sub-sewershed in the Lowries Run sewershed. The portion funded by 3RWWDP included the installation of view ports in the service laterals of the homes to allow for I/I inspection during periods of wet weather.

Total Cost: $167,257

3 Rivers Wet Weather Grant Award: $56,539

Start Date: Spring 2001

Completion Date: November 2002

Project Progress: Complete

Final Project Report: This project documented the cost-effectiveness of sanitary sewer rehabilitation within three mini-sewer systems and one control system by comparing rehabilitation costs expended vs. infiltration/inflow abatement. The fold and form method of cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) was the rehabilitation method used. With regard to infiltration, the post-construction flow monitoring concluded that the lining and lateral repair program has minimal benefit. One assumption for this minimum reduction is that the largest areas of infiltration contributors originate from the house service sewers. The data for inflow likewise concludes that minimal reduction of inflow was achieved.
