Application of Ceramic Membrane Filtration to Combined and Sanitary Sewer Overflows

Entity Involved: University of Pittsburgh

Project Goal: To evaluate the applicability of membrane filter technologies for use in treating wet weather sewer overflows at the point of discharge to a watercourse.

Project Summary: This is a research project to evaluate the application of ceramic membrane filtration to SSO and CSO waters. The long-term goal would be to strategically locate these units within communities to separate "clean" water from diluted sewage. Clean water can be discharged to surface waters, and the concentrated remaining sewage piped to ALCOSAN for treatment. Research will focus on the selection, operation and maintenance of ceramic filters for wet weather applications, especially as it relates to acceptable quality for "clean" water.

Total Cost: $611,006

3 Rivers Wet Weather Grant Award: $288,348

Start Date: January 2002

Estimated Completion Date: Summer 2005

Project Progress: Pilot units are installed and operating at ALCOSAN. Data analysis complete. Click here for final report.
